Summit
Conference brings Hitler's and Mussolini's mistresses
together for tea in a witty yet chilling and timeless
exploration of
unchecked power, anti-Semitism, and gender roles. Eva
Braun and Clara Petacci talk first of music and fashion,
but soon slide into a dangerous game in which each assumes
her absent lover's authority, prejudices, and arrogance.
A German soldier, at first their guard, becomes their
plaything after he is revealed to be Jewish. If, as
Eva observes, "Men live by myths. But women create
them," then who is responsible when the myth veers
into darkness?
Robert
David MacDonald, the renowned Scottish playwright and
director, originally wrote Summit Conference for the
Citizens Theatre in Glasgow.
"Indifference
makes accomplices of us all, and we are responsible
for other people's actions in a precise ratio to our
power to prevent them from happening."
